A Winning Martial Arts Attitude

Here are some things you can do to become a true martial artist in spirit as well as in practice.

Remember not to compare yourself with others; you must try to do your best.

When making a point, do not argue. Talk calmly and try to be logical. If you do so, there is a better chance of being understood by the person you are talking to. If you are both arguing, often the problem can only get more and more complicated.

Know your strengths and weaknesses. Work on both. Ignoring your strengths may make you lose your advantage.

When it comes to practicing martial arts or doing homework, do not delay or be lazy. Doing so may be the beginning of a bad habit, which will become difficult to change later.

Be organized. If you are trying to juggle too many assignments, hobbies and other types of work, you need to write them down, according to priority, in a planner, so that

you can do all that you are supposed to do.

Share your problems with others. If you are having a problem that is making you uneasy, or making you worried, you should feel free to talk about it to someone you trust, preferably an adult. This could be your parent, a teacher, a mentor or a counselor. Sometimes they can offer a suggestion or throw light on your problem in a different way, which can help you solve it.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), one of the most important things we can do to prevent kids from becoming prone to violence is to raise them in a loving manner. We must use positive ways to handle the difficulties of raising children.

Importance of Supervision. According to APA, “Without proper supervision, children do not receive the guidance they need. Studies report that unsupervised children often have behavior problems.” They suggest that you should never leave young children alone at home, even for a short time.

Importance of Setting a Good Example.

Children will often subconsciously learn to behave in the same manner as the parents they live with. It is important to set up a good example for them to emulate. According to APA, “Teach your children that it is better to settle arguments with calm words, not fists, threats, or weapons.”

Being Consistent With Your Rules. When you are setting up rules for your kids, try to explain the logic behind the rule. Also tell them what your expectations are and the consequences of their actions. Then stick to your rules. If you don’t stick to the rules, your kids might want to experiment with what they can get away with. Kids need structure in their lives, and this can help provide structure.
